Cool Earth Solar’s Solution: Big Solar Balloons

Cool Earth Solar designed 8-foot inflated, balloon-shaped concentrators made of plastic film with a transparent upper hemisphere and a reflective lower hemisphere which when inflated with air, naturally forms a shape that focuses or concentrates sunlight onto a PV cell placed at the focal point. Fewer cells are needed to produce a lot more electricity, with a single cell in the concentrator generating about 300 to 400 times the electricity of a cell without a concentrator.

Forgive the folks in Livermore if they think someone is celebrating a birthday. A really big birthday.

But the huge balloon-like objects that will be installed later this month not far from the national laboratory are in fact Cool Earth Solar’s solution for capturing the sun’s heat.

Commercial rooftops represent an enormous potential resource for alternative energy production.  In the U.S. alone, approximately 30 billion square feet of commercial rooftop surface is available for PV systems and could be utilized to create in excess of 150 gigawatts of electricity. Globally, this number could be two to three times higher. Tapping even a small fraction of this potential would make a significant impact on the world’s energy needs. Read more
